Namesake City Supporters: Commissioner of the Northwest Territories
From the turn of the century, the federal government appointed Commissioners from the senior ranks of the civil service in Ottawa. These people usually were deputy ministers of a department which had some involvement in the North. The deputy ministers carried out their Commissioner's duties along with their own departmental responsibilities.
Under John Parker, the position of Commissioner became more like that of a provincial Lieutenant Governor. This transition coincided with the Legislative Assembly's elected members and its cabinet assuming greater authority and responsibility from the federal government. Commissioner Parker transferred the last of his authorities over Assembly matters to the Legislative Assembly in January of 1986.

Namesake City Supporters: Government of the Northwest Territories
The Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories has 19 members and functions in much the same way as a provincial legislature, except that there are no political parties. Six ministers and a Premier are elected by the members of the Assembly to form the Executive Council, also called the Cabinet. There is a Commissioner who fulfills a role similar to that of a Lieutenant Governor in the provinces.

Namesake City Supporters: Rotary Club of Yellowknife
The Rotary Club of Yellowknife leaped to the world wide web on October 1, 2000 with the launch of our first web site.
It was our hope that we could bring our club closer to the community by giving the public a portal into what Rotary is, what Rotary does, and how Rotary is working to make our community, our country and our world a better place.
