HMCS SUMMERSIDE

Command Team

Commanding Officer - LCdr Karle (Jan 2013 – Present)

REPLACE WITH CAPTION

LCdr Karle joined the Naval Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman NCIOP in 1991 at HMCS CHIPPAWA in Winnipeg, MB, while attending the University of Manitoba. After completing his QL1 training, and participating in several unit and national exercises, he made application for re-classification to officer. In 1994 he was accepted into the RESO training program and began his journey as a MARS officer, attaining his bridge watch-keeping certificate on-board HMCS COWICHAN. On completion of his MARS IV training he served in HMCS CHIPPAWA as Navigation Officer and Deck Officer, before transferring to HMCS CABOT to continue his education, where he graduated as a certified Commercial Pilot in 1999. He then re-joined HMCS CHIPPAWA while working within his civilian occupation until 2001.

In 2001, LCdr Karle accepted a 6 month “temporary” posting on the east coast, as Deck Officer of HMCS SHAWINIGAN, and quickly completed two years in that position before transferring to HMCS GLACE BAY to take on the role of Operations Officer. After a brief posting to MAROPSGRU Five as the Pay Loads Officer and Deputy Operations Officer, he returned to sea as the Executive Officer on-board HMCS SUMMERSIDE. From 2008 to 2010, having successfully completed his tour as XO, he was posted ashore as the Route Survey OpsO at TRINITY, where he completed training in multi-beam bathemetry, advanced survey techniques and operated on an array of sea-going platforms from small fishing vessels to the CCGS MATHEW. During this period he was selected at short-notice to deploy to Regional Command (South) in Afghanistan, as the first Afghan National Security Force Plans Officer, responsible to train and promote modern operational techniques within the Afghan elements, and act as liaison between the Afghan and Coalition forces.

In 2010 LCdr Karle graduated from the pilot Command Development Course and attained his Minor Warship Command qualification in December of that year. Subsequently, having been vocal about never having to conduct a tiered readiness program (TRP) as an Executive Officer (XO), he was then sent back to sea as XO on-board HMCS SHAWINIGAN to conduct her TRP to HMCS KINGSTON.

During his time in the Forces LCdr has participated in several domestic and international exercises (including MARCOT, Blue Game, and Loyal Mariner) and Operations ATHENA, QUIMIK, and CARRIBE.

He is married to Melissa, and together they have three wonderful children: Liam, Nathaniel, and Henry.
