On 16 August 2005, thirty-three sea cadets boarded HMCS SASKATOON for a day sail from HMCS QUADRA in Comox, B.C. The cadets arrived in Comox to participate in a six-week, national sea cadet training camp where they learn about the trades of band and bosâ??n and explore aspects of gunnery and sailing. The cadets consisted of a composite group coming from different areas across the country. On week six of their program the cadets had the opportunity to sail in HMCS SASKATOON to experience first hand life in the naval reserve. Throughout the day several evolutions were conducted including man overboard exercises, anchoring, shipâ??s handling demonstrations, fire exercises, weapons handling and gun demonstrations. The sea cadets participated in several and accompanied sailors throughout the day to learn different aspects of reserve trades. On having the opportunity to sail aboard a Kingston Class vessel, LCdr Cardinell of HMCS QUADRA agreed, â??This is definitely the highlight of their summer.â? At the end of the day the cadets were landed, many wanting to join the Naval Reserves at a later age and others with the desire to join the Regular Force. All were looking forward to returning to their respective parts of the country. After a busy summer sailing program, the sailors of HMCS SASKATOON couldnâ??t agree more.
