BIOGRAPHY – CDR Jones

CDR Lawrence (Larry) Jones was born in Chatham Ontario and raised on a farm near Florence Ontario.  He joined the Navy in 1983 under the Officer Candidate Training Plan and proceeded directly to Chilliwack British Columbia for Basic Training.

During his Naval Officer training he sailed in HMC Ships SASKATCHEWAN, MIRAMICHI, THUNDER and MACKENZIE.  On completion of his training in 1985, CDR Jones moved to Halifax to join HMCS ASSINIBOINE as a Bridge Watchkeeper.  He completed the Above Water Warfare Director course in 1988 and was appointed as the last Above Water Warfare Officer in HMCS ASSINIBOINE before her decommissioning.

From Jan 1989 until Jul 1991, CDR Jones was the Naval Operations Course Training Officer at the CF Fleet School Halifax, known today as CF Naval Operations School.  CDR Jones was appointed as Deck Officer of HMCS GATINEAU from Aug 1991 to Dec 1992 and then returned to CF Naval Operations School where he completed the Operations Room Officer and Anti-Air Warfare Controller courses in 1993. He was appointed to HMCS ALGONQUIN as Weapons Officer and then moved to HMCS ATHABASKAN as Weapons and Combat Officer from Dec 1993 to Jun 1996.

CDR Jones was promoted to LCDR and appointed as Weapons Officer and then Combat Officer on the Staff of Commander Sea Training Atlantic from Jun 1996 to Jul 1998. In Aug 1998 CDR Jones was posted to CF Naval Operations School as the Above Water Warfare Training Department Head.  In Aug 1999, CDR Jones attended the Continuous French Language Course in Shearwater Nova Scotia and on completion, was appointed as Combat Officer on the staff of Commander Canadian Fleet Atlantic from Jul 2000 to Jul 2002. This tour included the first deployment to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation APOLLO, embarked in HMCS IROQUOIS and HMCS TORONTO.

Upon return from Operation APOLLO, CDR Jones was posted to San Diego California as the Current Schedules Officer on the staff of Commander US Third Fleet from Jul 2002 to Jul 2005. Cdr Jones was appointed as Executive Officer of HMCS OTTAWA in Jul 2005. After a short but busy year, CDR Jones was promoted to his present rank and sent to Toronto to attend Canadian Forces Command and Staff College from Aug 2006 until Jun 2007.

CDR Jones was assigned to the staff of Commander Canadian Expeditionary Force Command in Jul 2007. During this tour, he was principle planner for all CF expeditionary missions outside of Afghanistan. He was then appointed Commanding Officer of Canadian Forces Station St John’s in June 2009. Most significantly, this tour included Operation LAMA 2/10, the Hurricane relief effort in Newfoundland in the wake of Hurricane Igor.

CDR Jones was appointed Commanding Officer of HMCS PRESERVER 05 August 2011.

CDR Jones is married to Janice Jones (nee Doyle) and has a son Logan born in 2002.
