Fleet Maintenance Facility CAPE BRETON (FMF CB) has maintained an apprenticeship training program since 1927 to sustain high standards of workmanship among its trades people. This program is jointly administered by FMF CB and Industry Training Authority, British Columbia (ITA BC). The Apprenticing Program trains workers to a high level of certification. Upon successf ul completion apprentices are entitled to the FMF CB Certificate of Apprenticeship; the Provincial Journeyperson’s Certificate; and Inter-Provincial Certification (where applicable).
The prerequisite for all apprenticeships is grade 12 graduation or a PSC approved equivalent. Apprenticeship in electronics also requires a diploma in a two-year electronic technology program. While pre-apprenticeship training in specific trades is not mandatory, it is considered to be an asset for the applicant.
Apprenticeships are usually four years in duration, and commence in Spring and Fall of each year. (Exception: refrigeration mechanic apprenticeship is five years). The starting wage for Post Secondary students is $15.42 with approximate incremental raises of 5% every six months

Application for Apprenticing:
Spring is generally when we undertake Apprenticeship recruitment. Trades apprenticeship staffing processes are posted at the Public Service Commission (PSC) website for approximately two weeks before the processes are closed. Serious applicants sho uld routinely check the PSC website for Apprenticeship processes as it is the sole source of hiring information.
Secondary School Apprenticeship Program (SSA)
The Student Apprenticeship Program is a joint program involving the Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton and the ITA BC. (http://www.itabc.ca/.) It is an initiative that gives grade 10, 11 and 12 students a chance to obtain valuable trades skills and experience working for the Canadian Federal Public Service.
High School Students work for the Department of National Defense as apprentice trainees over the summer holidays to build a potential career in naval repair work.
Participants earn while they learn. Our secondary school apprentices currently earn $10.37 an hour.
The Secondary School Student Apprenticeship Program gives students an opportunity to build on knowledge from school using their natural mechanical aptitude. We want the experience to be both challenging and f ulfilling for participants. Our goal is to lead students to a career with a future. If participants are successf ul in the program, they are automatically registered as reg ular apprentices. Further, all the hours Students Apprentices work while in the program will count toward their formal Apprenticeship.
We encourage all School District 61, 62, 63, 64 and 79 Secondary Students who are interested and qualified to submit applications for this program.
To become eligible for SSA opportunities students must go through their high school career counselor.
