HMCS HALIFAX

Sailor Profiles

AB Hawkins

My name is AB Jacob Hawkins, I was born and raised in West Jeddore, NS and attended high school at Eastern Shore District High.  I graduated in 2007 and in Jan 2008 I was shipped off to CFB Borden where I completed my basic military qualification.  Once I completed my 14 week basic training I was posted to Canadian Forces Fleet School in Esquimalt BC where I completed my 14 week basic engineering training (QL3).

Upon completion of my QL3 I completed my Naval Environmental Training Program (NETP), where I learned the basics of shipboard life from damage control and fire fighting to knots and seamanship.  After I completed my NETP I was posted to HMCS HALIFAX in October 2008 where I started my on the job training package called my QL4 or Auxiliary Machinery Operators Course (AMOC).  While on the HALIFAX I have travelled to places from Scotland to the Caribbean.  Recently I was deployed to Haiti where I assisted in the disaster relief effort in the city of Jacmel.

My job on the HMCS HALIFAX is to maintain and monitor the ships machinery, check oil levels, temperatures and conduct minor maintenance.  I find my job very rewarding in all aspects; from helping disaster stricken countries to trouble shooting and fixing a piece of machinery.  The team work and camaraderie on the ship within the Engineering Department is like nothing you will experience anywhere else, it is a life changing experience and I love my job.
