Command Team

Lieutenant-Commander Mike Speiser
LCdr Speiser joined the Canadian Forces after graduating from Trent University 1988 and completed his initial naval training in 1990. His first operational ship was HMCS HALIFAX where he was a member of the commissioning crew. Following a shore posting in Kingston, Ontario with the 1st Canadian Division HQ he completed the Anti-Submarine Warfare Director’s Course in 1996 and was subsequently posted to HMCS FREDERICTON as her Under-Water Warfare Officer until 1998. In FREDERICTON, he participated in a deployment with the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (SNFL), several sovereignty/fishery patrols and an EASTLANT deployment.
After this first tour in FREDERICTON, LCdr Speiser was posted ashore to the Acoustic Data Analysis Center Atlantic as the Sea Operations Officer. In 2000, he was posted again to HMCS HALIFAX serving as the Deck and Boarding Officer. This second tour in HALIFAX saw him complete two SNFL deployments and an OP APOLLO deployment. Following the Operations Room Officer course in 2003, he then served in HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN as her Operations officer and subsequently as Combat Officer. While in CHARLOTTETOWN, LCdr Speiser deployed on BALTOPS to Eastern Europe in addition to the normal cycle of exercises and sovereignty/fishery patrols. A highlight of this tour saw LCdr Speiser achieving his Surface Command Qualification in 2005 after successfully challenging the Command Board.
In 2006 after a year as a staff officer serving in MARLANT HQ, he was promoted to his present rank and moved his family out of the country to serve with the United States Navy on the staff of the Commander ASW Forces Third Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After a rewarding three years in Hawaii, he was recognized for his efforts and was awarded the US Meritorious Service Medal. Following Hawaii, LCdr Speiser moved his family to Ottawa where he worked in Maritime Staff HQ for the Director Maritime Policy and Operational Requirements, initially as the Maritime Security desk officer and then as the acting section head for the Chief of the Maritime Staff’s current operations section.
As a former “Freddie” LCdr Speiser returned to the east coast and was appointed as HMCS FREDERICTON’s Executive Officer in July 2011. LCdr Speiser is married. He and his wife Susan are the proud parents of two boys, Aidan and Patrick.
