Commanding Officer, LCdr Patrick Montgomery

  

Lieutenant Commander Patrick Montgomery joined the Naval Reserves in Victoria at HMCS MALAHAT in 1986.  Over the next several years, he balanced his time between learning at the University of Victoria and learning at sea, earning a B.Sc. (mathematics and physics) and M.Sc. (mathematics) from UVic.  As a Sub-Lieutenant, Pat served in HMC Ships PORTE ST. LOUIS, PORTE QUEBEC, PORTE DE LA REINE, PORTE DAUPHINE, and CHALEUR part-time during the winter and full-time in the summer months.

In 1993, Lieutenant (Navy) Montgomery and his new wife Kelly moved to Edmonton where he transferred to HMCS NONSUCH while pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Alberta.  While at Nonsuch, Lt(N) Montgomery served as the Operations Officer and also as the last Executive Officer for HMCS PORTE DE LA REINE for a unit Gate Vessel deployment in the fall of 1996.  After obtaining his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, and following a short post-doctoral fellowship held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Lt(N) Montgomery obtained a tenure-track position at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George.

While in Prince George, Lt(N) Montgomery kept active within the Naval Reserves by taking time to get to sea in HMC Ships NANAIMO, WHITEHORSE, MONCTON, AND EDMONTON.  With the help of the Naval Reserve Command Mentoring Program, he obtained his Minor Warship Command Qualification in November, 2004, and later served as Executive Officer of HMCS NANAIMO in the summer of 2005 and 2006, and was promoted to his current rank in 2006.  Recently, he served as Executive Officer of HMCS KINGSTON for the last half of 2008.

In his civilian career, Dr. Montgomery taught a variety of mathematics courses at UNBC, researching in fluid dynamics and mathematical ecology.  He enjoys music, sailing and Tae Kwon Do, and currently lives in Victoria, B.C., with his wife Kelly and sons Matthew and Andrew.
