Ever since sailors have "gone down to the sea in ships" they have created ways to communicate with other sailors in other ships. More than 200 years ago, Admiral Lord Howe of the Royal Navy invented a new system of numbered signal flags which corresponded to different letters, numbers and whole messages.
Using this system, Admiral Howe could coordinate his battle fleet. His ship captains knew to carry out a certain manoeuvre at a certain time. This gave Admiral Howe an advantage over his enemies. He won a great victory over the French fleet under Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse -- known as the "Glorious First of June." And Britain's most famous admiral - Admiral Lord Nelson - sent his own famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805... "England expects that every man shall do his duty."
Today, by looking at the signal flags flying from the masts of Canadian warships (and the warships of other nations), anyone close enough to see them can easily figure out what they are 'saying.' Why not use the flags to send a signal of your own -- just like Admiral Nelson did?
