Silver Tray from the cruiser HMCS QUEBEC
Artefact Submitted by:
PO1 K.A. Goral
Donated by:
HMCS DONNACONA
Description
The submitted artefact is a plate-silver tray presented to the light cruiser HMCS QUEBEC (ex-HMCS UGANDA, ex-HMS UGANDA) by the mayor and city council of Montreal upon her reactivation in 1952 to serve in the Korean conflict.
HMCS QUEBEC was constructed as the Crown Colony class light cruiser HMS UGANDA, commissioned in the Royal Navy in 1943. In 1944 she was refitted and transferred to the RCN as HMCS UGANDA, under the command of Capt (N) Rollo Mainguy. Following V-in-E day, she was stationed in the Pacific and gained a degree of notoriety when her crew, the majority of which had been conscripted under terms of service only for the war in Europe, opted to release, forcing the withdrawal of the ship from the Pacific theatre just two weeks before Japan’s surrender.
The ship was reactivated in 1952 to serve in the Korean War and re-commissioned as HMCS QUEBEC, on which occasion this silver tray was presented to her by Montreal mayor Camillien Houde. By coincidence, Mayor Houde had been interned in a prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War for encouraging opposition to the conscription programme that ultimately crewed UGANDA with the reluctant combatants that opted for release at the height of the Pacific conflict.
As HMCS QUEBEC, the ship contributed to Canada’s “train-busting” campaign in Korea and served two tours with distinction. Following the Korean War she attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and served in the RCN’s Cold War navy until she was paid off in 1956.

Two top portions of some of the last 4 inch shells fired by HMCS HAIDA
Artefact Submitted by:
Alexander Wm. DRIEGA, LCdr RCN (Ret’d)
Donated by:
Alexander Wm. DRIEGA, LCdr RCN (Ret’d)
Description
Two top portions of some of the last 4 inch shells fired by HMCS HAIDA prior to its refit in HMC Dockyard, Halifax in 1957.
The 4-inch guns were replaced by 3-inch/50 guns as the ship's main AA weapon when the Canadian Tribal class destroyers were converted from destroyer to destroyer-escort shortly after the Second World War. The same twin 4-inch mountings replaced the twin 4.7-inch mountings forward to reinforce the AA defence, which was considered weak on the Tribal class destroyers. The 4.7-inch mounting had a very limited AA capability and the air threat came to maturity during the war.
Mr Driega joined the RCN as a writer in October 1946, and was promoted to PO 1/C in September 1953. Was later promoted to A/SLt in April 1953 and retired from service as an LCdr in 1973. He served on two cruisers (HMCS ONTARIO and HMCS QUEBEC), on two destroyers (HMCS HAIDA and HMCS MCKENZIE), on eight different naval establishments, two training centers and at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.
