Leading Seaman Chad Strickland is a Naval Electronics Communications Technician in the Combat Systems Engineering department of HMCS Algonquin. Born and raised in Isle Aux Morts (literally "Island of the Dead"), Newfoundland and Labrador. Convinced it was a good option by several of his friends; LS Strickland joined the Canadian Navy in St. Johns, NFLD in 2005. LS Strickland particularly liked the options it provided in regards to technical education, and the Navy element seemed logical since he was raised in a coastal town. He attended Basic Training that same year in St. Jean sur Richelieu, QB and passed without difficulty. Immediately after Basic Training, LS Strickland was sent to the Marine Institute at CFNES (Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School) St. Johns to begin an intensive two year training program on his selected trade, commonly referred to as "Comm Tech". After completing one year in the Navy, he was promoted to the rank of Able Seaman. The program at CFNES is of a fairly high level, and required a large amount of study on Electric Theory and Application. After successfully completing this milestone in his career, LS Strickland was promoted to his current rank. With the promotion came the need for additional training on the specific equipment he would be maintaining on HMC Ships, such as SHINCOM, UHF / VHF / HF Radios, and Shipboard Clocks. This study program required an additional year of training.
After successful completion of his equipment training, he was quickly posted to HMCS Algonquin in 2008 and immediately began working as a Comm Tech. LS Strickland has shown a natural aptitude for the trade, as his co-workers often refer to him as being a ‘natural’ for the position. LS Strickland’s plain talking nature have paid dividends in his interactions with the crew in the course of maintaining vital internal communications; his insight and easy going nature have lent credit to himself and the Combat Systems Engineering Department.
In his time away from the ship, LS Strickland enjoys playing a variety of sports, but his primary love is for Ice Hockey. An integral part of Algonquin’s Ice Hockey team, LS Strickland has distinguished himself as a highly athletic member of the Canadian Forces. Away from work, he can also be seen camping and enjoying the outdoors.
LS Chad Strickland is a valued member of the Algonquin team.
